Trauma & EMDR Therapy in Birmingham, AL
Helping individuals heal from trauma and PTSD through evidence-based EMDR therapy. In person in Birmingham and online across Alabama.
Something Happened. And It’s Still With You.
Something happened. And even though time has passed, it hasn’t really passed for you.
Maybe you can’t stop replaying it; the thing that happened, what was said, what was done, what you couldn’t prevent. You’ve tried to push it down and move on. You’ve told yourself to get over it. Some days feel manageable. But then something small happens, a sound, a smell, a tone of voice, and suddenly you’re right back there.
You’re exhausted from carrying this. You’re tired of feeling stuck in a version of your life that still revolves around something that happened in the past. You don’t sleep well. Your relationships are suffering. You feel on edge, disconnected, or numb; sometimes all in the same day.
You’re not broken. Your brain is doing exactly what brains do after overwhelming experiences. And there is a way through.
Does Any of This Sound Like You?
• You find yourself triggered by things that shouldn’t feel like a big deal, but they do
• You avoid certain people, places, or situations because of what they bring up
• You feel emotionally “checked out” or disconnected from people you love
• Nightmares or intrusive memories keep interrupting your life
• You struggle with shame, guilt, or the feeling that somehow you were at fault
• You’ve been told you have PTSD, complex trauma, or childhood trauma, and you’re not sure where to even begin
• You’ve tried talk therapy before but feel like talking about it only makes things worse
You are not alone in this. And what you’re experiencing has a name, and more importantly, it has a path forward.
What Is EMDR Therapy and How Can It Help?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s an evidence-based therapy developed specifically to help people heal from trauma and PTSD, and it works differently from traditional talk therapy.
Here’s the thing about trauma: it doesn’t just live in your memories. It gets stored in your body and your nervous system in a way that keeps you stuck in a stress response, even when you’re no longer in danger. Talk therapy can be helpful, but sometimes talking through what happened isn’t enough, and for many people, it can actually feel retraumatizing.
EMDR works differently. Instead of requiring you to talk through every detail of what happened, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation- guided eye movements, tapping, or tones- to help your brain reprocess traumatic memories. Think of it as helping your nervous system finish what it couldn’t complete at the time of the trauma. The memory doesn’t disappear, but its emotional charge does. You can remember what happened without feeling like it’s happening all over again.
EMDR is recognized by the American Psychological Association, the World Health Organization, and the Department of Veterans Affairs as a highly effective treatment for PTSD and trauma.
Our therapists are trained through EMDRIA-approved coursework, the gold standard credentialing body for EMDR practitioners, so you can feel confident you’re receiving care that meets the highest professional standards.
EMDR Therapy Can Help With:

Trauma from accidents, illness, or medical events
Military or first responder trauma
What Does EMDR Therapy Actually Look Like at Sparrow?
We know that starting trauma therapy can feel intimidating, especially if you’ve been carrying this for a long time. We want you to know what to expect so you can take that first step with more confidence.
At Sparrow Counseling, we don't rush you into processing anything before you're ready. Your therapist will take the time to get to know you, understand your history, and make sure you feel safe and grounded before beginning any EMDR work. At the same time, we're committed to moving toward healing as purposefully as we can. We'll listen to your pace, and we'll also encourage you, because we genuinely believe in what EMDR can do. Healing is possible, and a greater sense of self and wholeness is worth working toward together.
Here’s a general sense of how the process unfolds:
Getting to Know You
We start by gathering your history, not to dredge everything up, but to understand where you’ve been so we can map the path forward. We also work on building internal resources and coping tools you can use both in and outside of sessions.
Building Safety
Before we touch any traumatic memories, we make sure you have the skills to stay regulated during the process. You will never be in over your head in a session with us.
Processing and Healing
Using bilateral stimulation, your therapist will guide you through reprocessing specific memories or experiences. Many clients are surprised by how much can shift in a single session.
Integration
As the emotional charge around memories decreases, you’ll start to notice real changes: better sleep, less reactivity, more presence in your relationships, and a sense of being able to breathe again.
Most people begin to notice meaningful changes within 6–12 sessions, though this varies based on the nature and complexity of your trauma.
You Deserve More Than Just “Coping”
At Sparrow Counseling, we don’t just want to help you manage your symptoms; we want to help you actually heal. There’s a difference between learning to white-knuckle your way through life and genuinely getting to the other side of what has been weighing you down.
Our therapists have completed 40 hours of in-class intensive EMDR training through an EMDRIA-approved program, plus an additional 10 hours of consultation training, meaning you're working with clinicians who have been rigorously trained and supervised specifically in this modality, not just introduced to it. Continued consultation with experienced, trained EMDR clinicians is a value we hold dear at Sparrow. Ongoing learning, skill-building, and professional growth aren't checkboxes for us; they're a core part of how we show up for our clients.
We know this isn’t easy. We know it takes courage to reach out. And we will fight for your healing every step of the way, whether that’s in our Birmingham office or through secure telehealth sessions anywhere in Alabama.

FAQs about EMDR Therapy

EMDR is often especially helpful for people who have already done talk therapy but feel like something is still stuck. Because it works at the level of how memories are stored, not just how they’re discussed, it can reach places that conversation alone doesn’t always access.
-
No. One of the things that makes EMDR different is that you don’t have to narrate every detail of your trauma. Your therapist will guide the process, but you are always in control of how much you share.
-
This varies from person to person. Single-incident traumas (like an accident or a specific event) often respond more quickly, while complex or developmental trauma may take longer. Your therapist will help you set realistic expectations during your first sessions.
